The reason Francesco da Buti and his friends compiled this document was in order to compile a complete and up-to-date anthology of the Latin language, in particular to counter the supremacy of the Italian language in European literature. Some of this compilation's pages were drawn by Antonio Pisano (1380–1455), a well-known painter and sculptor from Pisa. He is known for his work in such buildings as Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence Cathedral , and La Segrate . The Magdalen Manuscript consists of two volumes containing 382 pages: 340 leaves and 42 flyleaves. The first volume has about 200 leaves and the second volume has 170 leaves. The pages are written in an earlier script known as Roman cursive that was used from the tenth century to the eleventh century. The text is about 2.5 cm wide, 10 cm high, and 4 cm thick. The Magdalen Manuscript contains a vast number of manuscripts, works of art, maps, symbols, mathematical formulas, classical poetry including Ovid's "Metamorphoses", musical scores and theological texts.
